DON’T LET FIREWORKS RUIN YOUR HOLIDAY

6/21/2013

Even though the purchase of some types of fireworks may be legal in some neighboring states, the fact remains that they are still illegal to use and even possess in Illinois.  Remember, the laws in Illinois do not change over the July 4th holiday.  Fireworks are no more legal now than they are at other times of the year.  This includes the possession or use of fireworks that are purchased out of state.

The Vernon Hills Police Department stresses that all complaints of fireworks are investigated thoroughly.  If someone is found to be in violation, the items in question will be confiscated and the person(s) involved will be arrested and charged, when appropriate.  Adults, as well as minors, are subject to all enforcement action.

Vernon Hills’ ordinances prohibit any person from using, selling, delivering, exploding and/or possessing fireworks in the village.  The term “fireworks” includes firecrackers, cherry bombs, skyrockets, bottle rockets, roman candles, M-80’s, etc.  Sparklers are also prohibited in Vernon Hills. (Sparklers burn at 1,800 degrees!  For comparison, a match burns at 325 degrees.)

“In addition to the illegality, sometimes people forget about the obvious dangers involved,” said Mark Fleischhauer, Chief of Police.  “Fireworks are gunpowder explosives that can burn, cut and puncture.”

The Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness also reminds everyone that one out of every three fireworks injuries is to the eyes and one out of every four fireworks eye injuries means some kind of permanent blindness.

Anyone who has questions about fireworks laws should call the Crime Prevention Unit at  (847) 247-4889.

Additionally, the Village would like to remind everyone that containers, debris, refuse, landscaping materials, or recyclables shall not be placed curbside, in public view for collection, before 5:00 p.m. on the day prior to the scheduled collection.

Containers shall be removed and stored in accordance with Village ordinance before 7:00 p.m. on the collection day.  All Waste and recycling containers of garbage, debris, refuse, bundled landscaping materials and recyclables shall be stored inside a garage, building or dwelling and out of public view.

Seasonal Parking Restrictions

12/19/2012

Please keep in mind that, according to Village Ordinance 22-321, vehicles cannot be parked on Village streets for 12 hours after a snowfall of two inches or more. While this may serve as a minor inconvenience, it is absolutely necessary to have a free path for snow plows to clear the streets in a timely fashion.

Additionally, all parking in designated parking spaces during/following a snowfall is prohibited and will subject the vehicle to towing. Designated parking spaces will also be used as snow piling/stacking locations as conditions dictate.

Compliance with these snow-related rules is appreciated in advance. Together, we can make the winter-time pass quicker if we all do our part to make snow removal a quick and painless process.

NOTE: As always, village ordinance 22-263 prohibits parking on all village streets between 2am-6am (which includes streets in Sarah's Glen). Police officers will issue parking tickets for overnight parking violations in Sarah's Glen. Village Parking tickets can be paid online by clicking here.

If your car is towed, you can pay/pick up your car at Ernie's Towing, 909 S Milwaukee Ave, Vernon Hills IL 60061. Warning signage at both entrances to Sarah's Glen provide more information regarding Ernie's towing fees, pick up hours, etc.

Celebrate the 4th of July Safely! Personal Fireworks and Sparklers are Prohibited.

6/28/2012

Vernon Hills ordinances prohibit any person from using, selling, delivering, exploding or possessing fireworks in the village all year round. The term "fireworks" includes firecrackers, cherry bombs, M-80's, bottle rockets and Roman candles.

In addition, sparklers are also prohibited in Vernon Hills.  (Did you know that the tip of a sparkler burns at 1,800 degrees?  For comparison: a match burns at 325 degrees.)

Remember, the laws in Illinois do not change over the July 4 holiday or for any other holiday. In other words, fireworks are no more legal on these dates than they are at other times of the year.

The Vernon Hills Police Department stresses that all complaints of fireworks are thoroughly investigated. If someone is found to be in violation, the items in question will be confiscated and the person(s) involved will be arrested and/or charged when appropriate. This applies to both adults and minors alike.

Agencies across the area will be enforcing Illinois laws regarding fireworks, open burning, and hazardous conditions. Because of the dry conditions and the risk of rapid fire growth please “Celebrate SAFELY” this week by refraining from the use of illegal personal fireworks and sparklers.

Contact the Crime Prevention Unit at (847) 247-4889 or via e-mail if you have any questions regarding the fireworks laws.  For more information on fire safey, contact the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance.
